The 2025 Cheltenham Festival kicks off today, Tuesday, March 11, with an exciting line up of races. Here are selections for Day 1, featuring two horses per race with insights:
1.20 PM – The Michael O’Sullivan Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1)
Kopek Des Bordes: Trained by the legendary Willie Mullins, Kopek Des Bordes is widely regarded as one of the top novices to watch in this race. He has been a consistent performer in Irish Grade 1 races, showcasing his ability to handle the tough competition at the highest level. His jumping technique has improved significantly, and his form in testing conditions suggests he’ll thrive at Cheltenham. Although this will be his toughest test yet, his experience in top-class company makes him one to beat.
2:00 PM – The My Pension Expert Arkle Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)
Majborough: Majborough is a progressive horse with an exciting future ahead. Having switched to chasing this season, he has taken to the discipline seamlessly, winning two of his three outings over fences. His trainer, Nicky Henderson, is no stranger to success at Cheltenham, and Majborough’s sharp jumping and excellent stamina make him a formidable opponent in this field. With Cheltenham’s stiff test of stamina, Majborough’s endurance and experience should stand him in good stead.
2:40 PM – The Ultima Handicap Chase
- Whistle Stop Tour:
Whistle Stop Tour is a horse with real potential in the handicap division. Trained by Lucinda Russell, the eight-year-old has made solid progress through his career and is now hitting the prime of his form. His recent victory in a similar handicap event has earned him respect in the betting markets. He stays well, handles testing ground, and has the sort of tactical versatility that’s often required in these fiercely competitive races. Expect him to be in the thick of it with a strong finish.
3:20 PM – The Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle Race (Grade 1)
Lossiemouth:
Lossiemouth has been a standout mare in the hurdling division, and her decision to skip the Champion Hurdle in favor of this event could prove to be a wise one. She has consistently performed at the highest level and has a great turn of foot when the pace quickens. Lossiemouth’s record over hurdles is near flawless, and while this race is competitive, her blend of experience and class makes her a strong contender. Don’t be surprised if she makes a bold bid for victory as the race approaches its climax.
4:00 PM – The Unibet Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Constitution Hill:
Constitution Hill is arguably the standout performer of the entire Cheltenham Festival. Unbeaten in his career so far, this remarkable gelding has set new standards in the hurdling world, most notably with a dazzling victory at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. His sharp turn of foot, combined with his ability to hold off rivals in tough conditions, makes him the horse to beat. Many believe that Constitution Hill could be one of the greats of the sport, and his presence here is likely to send shockwaves through the field. He remains the hot favorite and rightly so.
4:40 PM – The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Race
Stencil:
Stencil’s form has been rising steadily, and his ability to run well in tough races makes him one of the more reliable juveniles in the field. He has a proven track record in competitive fields and is known for his smooth jumping and solid stamina. His trainer, Harry Fry, is adept at bringing young horses through the ranks, and Stencil has all the tools to make an impression in this competitive race. Keep an eye on him as he enters the final stretch.
5:20 PM – The National Hunt Novices’ Chase
- Haiti Coleurs:
Haiti Coleurs, trained by Rebecca Curtis, has been one of the standout performers in the novice chase category. Her progression over fences has been impressive, and she looks to have the stamina and jumping ability required to succeed at Cheltenham. The National Hunt Chase is known for testing horses over a long and grueling distance, and Haiti Coleurs has shown that she is well-equipped for such a test. Expect her to be a strong contender in the closing stages.
